In 1891 James and Isabella Lougheed, one of Alberta’s most influential families, built this beautiful mansion on what was then the outskirts of a young pioneer town. Since then, Dukes and Duchesses, Princes and Princesses, and the first female contingent of the Canadian army during WWII, have stayed at Lougheed House and brought with them their own unique stories. These personal stories of fascinating people are the connective threads running through all of the school programs. Students can metaphorically grasp the threads and unravel these unique histories as a lived experience as opposed to a static, abstract concept. The intimate and familiar environment of our cozy home is a truly unique learning space, where students are empowered to create a personal connection with the past, one that informs the present and future.

The Cobbs Corn Maze offers fieldtrips for all grade levels – from preschool to highschool -  and cover Alberta curriculum for a variety of subjects. Fieldtrips can be customized for teambuilding, leadership development, and special needs. Here is a list of standard fieldtrips

• Gemstone Mining: Students will learn about 3 different rock categories and how to identify rocks from each one, as well as some differences between rocks and minerals before sluicing out their own treasures to take home!
• Our Standard Fieldtrips are available on select dates and include 3 Educational Components. Choose any 3 of the following:
• Plant Life Cycle: Ever wonder about the challenges of growing corn in Calgary’s ever changing climate? Learn how our diverse weather affects how our plants grow and see the different stages of growth in a bean plant*, or corn plant*, or pumpkin*.
•       Animal Care with the 3 Little Pigs: Meet Wilbur, Babe, and Mr. Kevin Bacon our resident 3 “little” pigs Learn some fun facts about Pot Bellied pigs and what they need for proper care to stay happy and healthy.
• Creepy Crawlies Talk: Learn about all the creepy crawly critters living on and around our farm! Discover the amazing world of insects, arachnids, gastropods, and annelids (oh my!).

• Creepy Crawlies Scavenger Hunt: Get your students actively discovering the creepy crawly world with a scavenger hunt! An opportunity for students to learn first hand about the habitat, food chain and lifecycle of insects, arachnids, gastropods and annelids!

CPAWS offers both in-class learning, an outdoor guided hike, or both! The programs complement one another.

1. In the classroom. CPAWS will come to your classroom with all the tools we need to provide your students with a hands-on learning experience.
2. Outdoors. A certified hiking guide will take your class outdoors for the day on a guided hike. CPAWS will explore wetlands, forests, grizzly bear habitat, park ecosystems and species at risk, depending on the program.

CPAWS Southern Alberta provides award-winning environmental education programs for adults and youth in Calgary and the surrounding areas. Students learn environmental stewardship through our interactive programs. Since 1997, we have engaged over 100,000 students with environmental programs that link to the Alberta curriculum. We offer classroom programs and guided interpretive hikes for grades 2 to 12, as well as adult education for teachers and community groups.

Explore, create, and learn through the power of puppetry – programs for K-12!  WP Puppet Theatre Society has been offering performances, workshops, residencies and professional development for schools and communities since 1991.

W. P Puppet Theatre’s current production, Pigs in a Canoe and other Watery Stories, and the French language version, Petits Cochons dans un Canot, is suitable for grades K-6 and links curriculum from art to science.  The Artistic Director, Wendy Passmore-Godfrey, has recently won the Marjorie Batchelder McPharlin Award for education through the Puppeteers of America.  Wendy can customize  sessions to meet your classroom’s needs and goals, for any grade from K-12.

The Rothney Astrophysical Observatory is one of the principal research facilities within the University of Calgary’s Department of Physics and Astronomy. As one of Canada’s best-equipped astronomical teaching facilities they provide university students with the opportunity to use research-grade telescopes, an integral part of the undergraduate astronomy curriculum. As an astronomy resource for school children, teachers and community groups the RAO strives to serve the community as a resource to science educators and as a catalyst for science education in Alberta.

The RAO provides programs that explore sky science, light, optics and space exploration.  They are your guide to the universe with programs that are offered during the day or in the evening. Visit the observatory and see science in action at a research facility. They are offering Grade Six, Grade Eight, Grade Nine and Senior High Sky Science Programs which are all directly linked to Alberta Learning Science curriculum.
