Venture underground through 210 feet of newly re-timbered tunnel and walk the path of the miners up to the mine terrace, mine entry and newly restored Blacksmith shop! Calgary Humane Society Bullying Pets and People Gr. 7-9
In this interactive empathy building program, students learn about the connection between bulling and animal cruelty. Students soon warm up to discussing this difficult topic since we begin by focusing on animal welfare. By evaluating scenarios of abusive behavior in a group activity, students discover that views on abuse can vary substantially and that they have the power to create an atmosphere of acceptance in their school.

Calgary Humane Society Bullying: Pets and Peers Gr. 4-6
Students will discover the many similarities between bullying and animal cruelty by comparing the motivations and causes behind aggressive behavior. Calgary Humane Society Reptiles and Amphibians – Gr. 3 and Gr. 5
Yes the slimy and scaly creatures need attention too. With the recent popularity of reptiles and amphibians in the pet trade it is important that parents and children understand the ins and outs of the animal family member being adopted into their home. This program educates students on the difference between wild and domestic animals, on the various reptiles and amphibians found in Alberta, and the popular reptiles in the pet trade today. We take a look at the needs of these unique creatures and some of the conservation efforts and laws that are out there to protect the wild populations. Calgary John Howard Society Mock Trials
The Mock Trials program is an engaging and interactive way for high schools students to learn about the criminal trial process in Canada. During 5 class periods (of 1.5 hours each) students will learn about the Canadian court structure, innocence principles, various roles in court, rules of evidence and the four elements of an offence a Crown Prosecutor must prove to win their case. Each student will assist in creating the evidence and will be assigned a court role to re-inact a criminal trial. This workshop offers students a chance to discover the science of aviation and flight firsthand. Calgary Spaceport Monster Machines Workshop
Imagine that it is the year 2102 and the Canadian Space Agency has discovered a new habitable planet! The planet is covered in ice and snow all year long, so astronauts and scientists have to make the planet “people ready”. Your students will think up a new machine design that will help to build communities on this hypothetical planet. Working in teams of 5, students will design, build, and present their creations using K’nex. Duration: 45-60 mins, Maximum 30 students per program.

Calgary Spaceport Problem Solving on Earth
After a brief history of space disasters and problems, students will work as a team to solve a “space dilemma”. In a hypothetical situation in which astronauts are stranded on Titan (one of Saturn’s moons), students will have to decide as a group whether or not to send a repair mission to Titan, or let the astronauts take their chances coming home on their own. Groups will represent different delagates while debating, such as astronauts, politicians, and civilians. Duration: 1 hour, Maximum 30 students per program.

This exciting and interactive stage show helps students discover the history of rocketry, and find out how rockets work, using Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion. Date: Saturday, March 6, 2010 — The TECHhead Challenge offers Junior High students a special opportunity to be inventive and work effectively with others as they design and build an operative piece of technology in a fun day-long competition. Teams of four students explore circuitry and electronics with an industry expert by dismantling VCRs, radios, speakers, motors and more! Soon after, teams take on a mystery technology challenge. They will create a new, working piece of technology designed to solve a fictional technical problem. Students also prepare and give a short presentation to explain the science behind the device. The TECHhead Challenge has strong curriculum connections and it will help to develop young minds that are keen to be involved in technology driven projects. No prior research is necessary, as industry experts will give a brief “technology lesson” before the competition. Referencing current media stories, this workshop begins the hot debate on one of the many areas for collision between art and politics. Your “hot art” medium will be encaustic* painting – essentially painting with molten wax – an intriguing and rewarding technique that dates back to Ancient Egypt. Explore a temporary exhibit featuring photographs, artefacts, and stories about Albertans held in German prisoner of war camps and Germans held in Canadian camps during the Second World War. YouthLink Calgary – The Calgary Police Interpretive Centre ”Where’s The Evidence”
Hand’s on forensic science program that meets the needs of the Grade 6 Science Curriculum, Evidence and Investigation unit. A classroom kit is studied up to 6 weeks in advance and the class field trip takes place at the Interpretive Centre where the crime is solved through investigation of forensic material related to the crime.This is a free program but advance booking is required through our booking line 403 206 2009. A $50 deposit to secure your spot is required at time of booking. Program runs Tues, Wed, Thurs, Fri morning from 9:30-12:00 and Tues, Weds, Thurs afternoon from 12:00-2:30.While at the Centre the students can also explore our exhibits on CSI Calgary, Safe City 2.0, Dead End Street, Gangs and Bullies.
