Students will investigate the network of parks and protected areas that we have in Alberta, and will discover the purpose of protecting landscapes and ecosystems. We will look at local species to investigate trophic interactions, ecosystem dynamics, dispersal, keystone species, umbrella species, and more. We will use games and hands-on activities to explore the species within some of Alberta’s local ecosystems, and will then investigate some of the impacts that different human activities can have on the very ecosystems we are living in. Students will engage in critical thinking as they determine why we protect land, how we protect land, and what we can do to help increase our protected area networks.
