Math-Up the Art: The Geometric Abstraction of Lawren Harris + Studio

Line, shape, colour, space, pattern, and symmetry are extremely important elements in visual art. These fundamental components can be efficiently defined and explored when comparing works of art from within the genre of Geometric Abstraction.  Lawren Harris is likely best known for being a founding member of the Group of Seven – famously depicting Canada’s rugged landscape. Paintings from Harris’s abstract period are less familiar but just as fascinating. In this program, students will explore our exhibition Higher States: Lawren Harris and His American Contemporaries and investigate both representational and non-representational compositions and the mathematics used to create them.  To conclude the program, classes with spend time in our studio space where they will use a variety of mathematical tools to create their own geometric composition.
