Waste in our World

In the Waste in our World program students explore the environmental issues related to waste disposal through an inquiry-based and hands-on activity. They work cooperatively in groups to build a landfill model that will function to protect groundwater from “garbage leachate”.

Groups progress onto subsequent challenges that encourage them to consider other aspects of the environment and make their landfill even safer for the environment. The program wraps up with a discussion about the amount and types of waste produced by human activity and how the students themselves can help divert waste from landfills.

Program Components
  • •Activities are designed to fully engage participants in an experiential, hands-on manner. The program is inquiry based, as students investigate a practical environmental issue and develop possible solutions themselves.
  • •By enhancing their awareness of issues surrounding waste disposal, students will have the opportunity to identify how they can make a difference by improving their own practices related to reducing, reusing, recycling and composting.
  • •The program helps relate the science curriculum to local issues students can relate to and addresses many other learner expectations and skills.
