About This Program

Students step into the role of ecologists as they investigate grassland and forest ecosystems using hands-on sampling techniques. Through field-based exploration, they discover what shapes these ecosystems and consider the role provincial parks play in protecting Alberta’s biodiversity.

In this full-day terrestrial field study, students become ecologists as they explore both grassland and aspen (or boreal) forest ecosystems. Using a variety of ecological sampling techniques, students collect and compare data while considering the factors that shape these distinct ecosystems. The program concludes with activities that explore the important role provincial parks play in protecting Alberta’s biodiversity within a landscape affected by a changing climate.

What to Expect

This is a full day field study offered in Kananaskis Country at Sibbald Lake. Students need to come prepared to be outside for the day rain or shine. Outhouses and a shelter are available on site.
