About This Program

Bats are mysterious, misunderstood and absolutely remarkable! Discover the incredible adaptations, surprising behaviours and important ecological role of Alberta's only flying mammals.

Furry, fascinating and full of surprises! Bats are the only mammals capable of true flight, but their remarkable abilities don't stop there. Are bats really blind? How do they hang upside down without falling? And just how many insects can a little bat eat in one night? In this interactive Wild Wise presentation, students explore the fascinating adaptations, behaviours and ecological importance of bats through songs, movement, animal sounds, hands-on biofacts and real wildlife stories. They'll discover how bats navigate in the dark using echolocation, why these nocturnal insect-eaters are so important to healthy ecosystems and what makes Alberta's bat species so unique. Along the way, we'll bust common bat myths, explore the challenges bats face, including habitat loss and white-nose syndrome, and learn how we can safely coexist with and protect these remarkable flying mammals. Perfect for Kindergarten to Grade 6, this program encourages students to look beyond the spooky stereotypes and appreciate the incredible bats living right here in Alberta!

What to Expect

This interactive, 60-minute classroom presentation is delivered by a Calgary Wildlife educator at your school or organization. Students explore local wildlife through engaging visuals, songs, movement, animal sounds, biofacts such as pelts and skulls, and real stories from our wildlife rehabilitation hospital. Each program encourages curiosity, introduces ways to coexist with urban wildlife, and includes wildlife worksheets and a sticker for continued classroom learning. A TV or projector with audio is required; if one is not available at your location, we can bring our own. Please note that Wild Wise programs do not include live animals.
