About This Program

Discover the secret lives of Calgary's striped, nighttime neighbours! Through songs, movement, fascinating biofacts and real wildlife patient stories, students learn how skunks communicate, defend themselves and help keep our urban ecosystems healthy.

Stripey, stinky and surprisingly helpful! Skunks are among our most misunderstood urban neighbours, but there's much more to these nocturnal animals than their famous smell. Do skunks really want to spray us? What are they trying to communicate when they stomp their feet? And why are skunks so important to healthy neighbourhoods? In this interactive Wild Wise presentation, students discover the fascinating adaptations, behaviours and ecological roles of striped skunks. Through songs, movement, sounds, animal biofacts and real patient stories from Calgary Wildlife's rehabilitation hospital, students explore the challenges skunks face in urban environments and what we can do to help. Perfect for Kindergarten to Grade 6, this program encourages curiosity, challenges misconceptions and helps students discover why sharing our neighbourhoods with skunks isn't such a stinky idea after all!

What to Expect

This interactive, 60-minute classroom presentation is delivered by a Calgary Wildlife educator at your school or organization. Students explore local wildlife through engaging visuals, songs, movement, animal sounds, biofacts such as pelts and skulls, and real stories from our wildlife rehabilitation hospital. Each program encourages curiosity, introduces ways to coexist with urban wildlife, and includes a wildlife journal and sticker for continued classroom learning. A TV or projector with audio is recommended. Please note that Wild Wise programs do not include live animals.
