About This Program

This two-program STEAM session is great for curious minds! Students will have the opportunity to explore The Hangar Flight Museum, find new places, and make their own maps, just like the famous northern bush pilots! After lunch, students have the opportunity to move their bodies, learn about the jobs that aircraft do, and put their newfound knowledge to the test in our classroom to make airplane collage projects that they can take home with them.

In this two-part program, students will partake in two programs. For a double-class booking (more than 35 students), each class will do one program in the morning, and then switch to do the other program after lunch. For a single-class booking, they will do one in the morning, and the other in the afternoon! In the Social Studies "Junior Navigators" program, students will learn about the importance of mapping! They will begin with a classroom discussion portion, and learn how to read a map, what the important pieces are, and how to navigate through a space. After, they will create symbols to place on a map of the Hangar, and then we will traverse out into the museum together. Once here, they will review how to read a map and compare it to real life, placing their symbols, and discovering parts of the museum that are un-mapped! They might even have a chance to do a scavenger hunt around the museum, and track their routes! The Visual Art "Dream Machines" program begins with a body movement exercise, to get students familiar with the language used in aviation. They will wiggle out their landing gear, put up their wings, and tip over their fuselage. We will move through the museum, having a discussion about how each aircraft does a different job, and how we can tell what their jobs are! After, students will head into the classroom space, and have the chance to create their own unique aircraft collage, where they not only choose the style of wings, landing gear, and fuselage, but also the job that their aircraft will do! Their aircraft collage is a take-home piece of art that will impress everyone who sees it!
