About This Program

This quintessential Remembrance program allows students to explore Canada's Great War legacy, from the Armistice in 1918 to contemporary commemorative practices.

This is our fundamental Remembrance program and has been adapted for all grade levels. While most popular in November, this program offers an overview of responsible citizenship and historical awareness appropriate for any time of year. Students will explore the legacy of the Great War in Canada, from the moment the guns fell silent on 11 November 1918 to modern acts of commemoration. Division I students will focus on more tangible aspects of Remembrance (the symbol of the poppy, statues and plaques, ceremonies, etc.) and collaborate to create a poppy wreath. Division II students will come to understand what made the First World War so different and why Remembrance proceedings today still draw so heavily on this hundred-year-old conflict. A tour will take them through a replica Great War trench, into Halls of Honour, and past thoughtful art pieces. Division III students will confront the political realities of the early twentieth century, from the network of fraught alliances abroad to conscription and colonial obligations at home. Division IV students will look beyond the First World War to see how we commemorate from statues to services and more. A tour will take them through a replica Great War trench, into Halls of Honour, and past thoughtful art pieces.

What to Expect

A 45 minute walking tour through several museum spaces, introducing students to themes of remembrance, and its history in Canada.

Curriculum Connections

Curriculum Connected

While this program has no direct curriculum connections with the Alberta K-12 education requirements, it offers all students an opportunity for insightful reflection on past events. It opens the door to a better understanding of what Remembrance Day symbolizes and the history behind it. The tour is designed to compliment our other curriculum-based tours and presentations. For curriculum connections, please see our other offerings. This program is appropriate for all grades and ages.
