About This Program

The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) has launched Emerging VetMed Innovators (EVMI): an engaging program designed to broaden perspectives on veterinary medicine in Alberta and beyond through connections to the Alberta curriculum. The program runs throughout the school year with self paced virtual learning, a class or teacher selected project related to veterinary medicine in Alberta, and a culminating field trip to UCVM as a Showcase and Celebration of Learning.

The University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) is pleased to have launched Emerging VetMed Innovators (EVMI): an engaging program designed to broaden perspectives on veterinary medicine in Alberta and beyond through connections to the Alberta curriculum. Gain access to a virtual classroom with self-paced learning modules and lesson plans that provide specific curricular connections, plus extension options to make learning cross curricular and/or transdisciplinary. These modules and lessons also include assessment tools, differentiation and extension options, learning materials, and additional resources to smoothly implement this learning as part of your class's learning, in whatever context suits your needs best. Additionally, the virtual classroom contains resources and examples/templates for class projects that connect your classroom to 'real world' veterinary contexts, contributing to service-learning and fostering real community impact for your class. Projects are customizable to classroom scope and context and additional supports are available. As the culminating aspect of this program, classes are invited on a field trip at UCVM to showcase their projects with other participating classes, tour UCVM facilities, experience Veterinary Medicine activities and simulators, and celebrate their learning and hard work for the Alberta Veterinary Medicine community! Field trips are currently offered in the spring. EVMI is flexible, scalable, and offered throughout the school year, with periodic field trip dates to accommodate your class or school's schedule. Ongoing support is available from the program coordinator to ensure it fits your unique classroom context. Engage in curriculum in a new way, through the lens of veterinary medicine, and create real impact within the veterinary community of Alberta!

What to Expect

You and your students can expect to explore veterinary medicine from new perspectives and learn about the important role it plays in all of our lives, whether we have pets or not. How is veterinary medicine connected to subjects like Physical Education, Fine Arts, or Literacy? Great questions! This program aims to supports teachers in facilitating multidisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary learning. Through strategies such as design-thinking and project-based learning, students engage with concepts across multiple subject areas and real world context while working toward specific curricular outcomes.
